Many businesses in Agri-Foods have heard of, or are aware of grant programs that support members of this industry. Granted’s goal is to develop a stronger network of food processors and growers in Canada, and help them leverage grant programs at different stages of business. Below is a list of hiring, training, and market expansion grants that apply to the food industry. Note: Grants change all the time, this is a snapshot based on programs available/expected as of October 2018.

Generally, we find companies who meet the following criteria have more grant opportunities:
  • Registered business for 2+ years
  • Have a minimum of 5 full time employees
  • Have established revenue


Hiring Grants

Career Focus - Food Processing - Deadline: Oct 31 2018

Allows you to hire recent post-secondary graduates to work on projects within your agri-food business. Placements may last between four and 12 months and begin in April 2019.

Career Focus - AgriGreen - Deadline: Oct 31 2018

Green jobs initiative to fund for positions geared to young recent graduates and high school students working in the agriculture industry projects that benefit the environment. A maximum of $16,000 per young recent graduate 30 years or younger to undertake environmental activities,services or research that will benefit the agricultural sector.

Youth Hiring Grant

Youth Hiring Grant: Provides a 3-month wage subsidy of $2,800 (plus $1,000 in training credits) for new hires aged 29 or under. This program supports virtually any full-time position in your organization. Note that the employees must not be enrolled in full-time studies and cannot be returning to full-time studies after the subsidy term is complete.

  • Value: $2,800 per hire (plus $1,000 in training credits)

Digital Tech Internship

Provides a wage subsidy of up to $15,000 for a 6-12 month placement in digital tech for recent graduates aged 30 or under.  Placement must be full-time and related to digital skills, i.e. the digitization of your company and/or its products or processes. Employers are also eligible to receive up to $3,000 in training costs to further develop the skills of the intern.

  • Value: max. 50% of wages up to $15,000 (including up to $3,000 in training costs)
  • Status: Open now. Turnaround time is 2 business days.


Training Grant

Employer Training Grant

This program helps employers offset the cost of training for new and current employees to gain the skills they need to fill available jobs or improve their skill sets.

  • Up to 100% of training costs to a maximum of $10,000 per person.
  • Application intake: Likely to open Q1 2019 for courses beginning April-August 2019.



Market Expansion and R&D Grants

Market Development Program

Federal and provincial cost-shared funding allowing certified consultants to assist with market skills training, market development planning, market strategy and market skills training. This program is available for businesses across Canada to undertake domestic and export market development projects and activities.

  • Maximum eligible funding is $50,000 per year per project, must contribute 50% in cash of total project cost
  • Status: Open now.
Agri-Marketing Program - Pending extension

Federal program offering up to $100,000 for businesses in agriculture, agri-food, fish and seafood sectors that are market and export ready.

  • Value: 50% of eligible activities up to $50,000 (or $100,000 for a two year project
  • Status: Open now. Turnaround time is 75 business days.

This program aids businesses to accelerate the commercialization of their product or service to increase the competitiveness and sustainability of the innovation in their respective sector. Project activities must end on or before March 31, 2023.

  • Value: 50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $10M (for project total not exceeding $10M)
  • Status: Open now. Turnaround time is 100 business days

This program aids businesses to implement assurance projects that address market and regulatory requirements for export. The program aims to expand export opportunities for Canadian agricultural and agri-food products. Project activities must end on or before March 31, 2023

  • Value: 50% of eligible costs to a maximum of $50,000 (for project total not exceeding $100,000)
  • Status: Open now. Turnaround time is 75 business days.

Available to applicants and companies undertaking sector/product specific marketing and promotional activities such as marketing and promotional tools, BC focus market development, media advertising and labeling and packaging with a Buy BC logo to increase consumer demand and sales of BC agrifood and seafood products.

    • Up to $45,000 maximum eligible funding/year dependent on annual gross revenue from last 2 years
