Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing industries across the globe, and Canada is leading the charge with programs designed to help businesses integrate AI into their operations. One of the most exciting opportunities for Canadian businesses is the Scale AI program, a significant grant that offers millions in funding to boost the adoption and commercialization of AI, particularly within supply chains.

But what exactly does this grant cover, who can apply, and why should you care? Let’s break it down.

About The Grant

The Scale AI grant is crafted to empower Canadian businesses across various industries to leverage AI and enhance their value chains. By supporting companies in sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, retail, logistics, and construction, Scale AI enables businesses to adopt advanced technology, streamline operations, and maintain a competitive edge.

What sets this grant apart is its impressive funding potential. The program provides non-repayable funding of up to 40% of eligible expenses, with an average project receiving around $2.5 million. However, there is no official cap on the funding limit—large and small projects can be eligible for more or less, depending on the scope and impact of the AI integration.

Eligible projects must contribute to the adoption of AI or the commercialization of AI-based products, making this a perfect fit for innovative companies looking to use AI to drive their business forward. Whether your business operates in consumer goods, industrial manufacturing, or even healthcare, if you’re using AI to enhance your supply chain, Scale AI could provide the financial boost you need.

Program Overview

The Scale AI program operates through a consortium model consisting of 3 to 4 companies, meaning that two or more applicants must work together on a project to qualify. One of the applicants must be a small- or medium-sized enterprise (SME), a research institution, or a post-secondary institution. This collaborative structure ensures businesses, researchers, and educational institutions pool resources and knowledge to create high-impact projects.

To apply, businesses must first become members of Scale AI. But don’t worry, the membership fees aren’t due until after your project has been approved, so there’s no financial barrier to getting started.

Projects funded by this program typically last 12 to 18 months but can extend up to two years. If you’re thinking of longer-term research and development projects, Scale AI isn’t the right fit, as it focuses on practical applications that can be implemented quickly. The program funds new, incremental work, not regular business operations, ensuring that the projects drive innovation and do not simply maintain the status quo.

All work must be executed in Canada, and projects nationwide are eligible for funding. However, if your business is based in Quebec, you may have access to even more funding, making it an ideal time for companies in that region to explore AI integration.

The application process evaluates several factors, including your team’s management capabilities, the potential business impact, alignment with Scale AI’s strategic objectives, and the broader ecosystem impact. Scale AI is looking for projects that drive measurable business outcomes, align with the future of AI technology, and foster collaboration within Canada’s AI ecosystem.

 Application Window

The Scale AI program operates on an ongoing basis, with no set deadlines for applications, but the turnaround time for approvals can take between three to four months. This means businesses have flexibility in applying when their projects are ready, but they should plan for a moderate waiting period before starting the project.

It’s important to note that projects should be well-scoped and thought out before submission, as applications are evaluated based on the team’s detailed planning, project management, and expected outcomes. Having the endorsement of your company’s CEO or other executives is also an essential eligibility requirement.
